Amsterdam, my Mokum paradise. That’s how a beloved Dutch song describes the city. Amsterdam is often called “The Venice of the North,” but centuries ago, it was known as “The Jerusalem of the West.” In Yiddish, mokum simply means “place”,  a home.

On this tour, we’ll explore the Jewish history of Amsterdam, from the late 16th century to the aftermath of the Second World War. It’s a story shaped by the so-called tolerance of the 17th century and the indifference of the 20th.

We’ll walk past some of the city’s most important Jewish buildings and monuments, including the Portuguese Synagogue, the Holocaust Museum, and the National Holocaust Memorial. We will discover a rich, complex, and moving history that still resonates today.
